CHARLIE HAS BEEN
ADOPTED - 3/20/2010 |

Charlie is a three year old,
neutered, male Border Collie. He had a bad start in life,
but is now on the road to recovery. Although their
first dog, a Labrador Retriever never caused them any problems,
Charlie's owners probably should not have had a working bred
Border Collie as a pet.
Their inability to set clear boundaries for his
behavior and failure to provide appropriate consequences for
unacceptable actions (from early on) resulted in a very
unbalanced dog. As a result, Charlie had become
fear-aggressive. Although I am Charlie's breeder and
although my puppy contract requires folks to contact me if they
find themselves struggling, Charlie's owners went against the
advice of their veterinarian who, twice, suggested that they
contact us for assistance. Instead, they employed the
"assistance" of "professionals" that were unable to address the
root cause of Charlie's condition - which, in a nutshell, was a
complete lack of leadership. He was put onto
anti-psychotic medicine and then euthanasia was contemplated as
a final resort. Only then was I contacted that anything
was amiss with Charlie. We changed his
name to Charlie because it seemed to us that even when we
uttered his original name he got unnerved. When he
arrived, he was afraid of his own shadow, cords on the floor,
noises of any type. But, he never showed any aggression
toward us, cats or any other dogs. That is contrary to
what his first owners stated about Charlie - who they felt had become so aggressive they were contemplating ending his
life. But, the moment I looked into his eyes, I could tell
that he was just hoping to encounter a world that made sense to
him. I could tell that he was not a lost cause, he was
just a bit of a lost soul.
Charlie has been with us for four weeks.
We now believe his rehabilitation has come to the point where he
would transition well into a new, forever home, with someone who
can project a sense of calm, confidence and mostly, who will
place high standards on his behavior. This is something
that was clearly lacking in his life.
Charlie is loving and kind. He is good
with our cats. He loves to play. He is an avid
retriever and adores his Frisbee. When Charlie meets new
dogs they do not perceive him as unbalanced or threatening.
He shows no resource guarding and can eat from the same bowl as
other dogs.
Charlie is up to date on his vaccinations and
is on routine heartworm meds.

As part of the
adoption, Charlie's new owners are required to attend a
One Day
Workshop to make certain that errors made by his previous
owners are not repeated, and to get off on the right foot with
Charlie. If you are
interested in Charlie, please fill out this application:
Or,
